Best Craft Ideas for Kids

TV and video games may be fine to a certain extent, and board games can also be fun; however, what kids really love doing is making crafts, plus it’s a good way to spend some time with your kids. That said, there are so many different craft ideas that it might just make your head spin. Finding the right crafts to make with your kids can be difficult, but we are here to help with a list of some of the best craft ideas for kids.

1. Personalized Bucket Seats

Crafts don’t only have to look cool, they can be functional too, as is the case with these customized bucket seats. Yes, these are large buckets which are fitted with a homemade cushion and artistically customized. These bucket seats look really neat, your kids can make them look however they want, they serve as portable seats (such as for camping), and items can even be stored in the bucket too.

What You’ll Need

  • 5 gallon bucket
  • Heavy-duty lid
  • 2 inch high density foam
  • 10 inch cardboard cake circle
  • A Sharpie
  • A utility knife
  • Sewing scissors
  • Some type of tablecloth material
  • Staple gun
  • Super glue
  • Decorative tape

How to Make

  1. Put the cake circle on the foam and use the sharpie to trace a circle onto the foam.
  2. Score the circle with the utility knife and then cut it out with the scissors.
  3. Cut a piece of tablecloth about 16” square. Place the fabric face down and center the foam circle on top of the fabric, and top it off with the cardboard circle.
  4. Fold the fabric up over the cake circle and the foam circle, and then use the staple gun to hold everything together.
  5. Use the super glue or some other type of epoxy to secure this seat cushion to the lid of the bucket, the top side of the lid.
  6. You can now use the tape and any other means to decorate the rest of the bucket.

2. Glue and Macaroni Pictures

This one is an oldie, but also a time-tested favorite. You probably remember making macaroni pictures in school when you were a kid. These are really neat, and kids always seem to love making them. One reason why macaroni pictures are so fun to make is because kids can shape and design them into literally anything. They can make people and pets, race cars, houses, and everything in between. It’s all relatively simple, not many materials are required, and it’s a very affordable craft for kids to do as well.

What You’ll Need

  • Child-safe glue
  • Paper or construction paper
  • Elbow macaroni
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils & glitter (optional)

How to Make

Making these macaroni pictures is exceedingly simple. All your child has to do is figure out what design to make, so maybe a car or something easy like that.

  1. Use a pencil to draw a rough outline of whatever shape or item is being made with the macaroni.
  2. Place a thin layer of glue on the outline and then stick the macaroni to the glue. Ensure to wait long enough for the glue to dry.
  3. Any decorations can then be made afterwards.

3. Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Making your own sidewalk chalk paint at home is going to be a bit messy, and there are a few things you will need to buy. However, we think that this is a really cool craft idea for kids, because making chalk paint is a craft in itself, and then using that paint to draw on the sidewalk is another craft. It’s like a two-in-one craft.

The reason why we are talking about making your own chalk paint is because chalk itself can be very messy, and all of those little broken pieces turn into dust that goes everywhere. You can always use smaller broken pieces of chalk, the leftovers for this, but we just went with full pieces of chalk, because we really wanted to see how this homemade sidewalk chalk paint would turn out.

What You’ll Need

  • Ziploc bag
  • Chalk
  • Containers
  • Hammer
  • Water
  • Paint brushes

How to Make

  1. Take the chalk pieces and put them in a bag.
  2. Use the hammer to turn the chalk into fine dust.
  3. Transfer the chalk powder into some small containers, bowls, or something similar.
  4. Mix with enough water to make a fine paint, not too thick or too thin.
  5. Use the paint brushes to start painting the sidewalk.

4. Ladybug Painted Rocks

Ladybug painted rocks are a really neat craft that kids and adults alike can make at home. This is something that will let your kids get really creative and create all sorts of ladybugs with different color combinations. Keep in mind that your kids don’t have to paint ladybugs onto the rocks. It could also be a bumblebee or something similar, as long as it’s coherent with the shape of the rock.

Now, this is not the most affordable craft for kids, as there are a few materials you will need to buy, but it certainly is a very fun craft that the whole family can enjoy. The finished bug rocks can then be put in the garden, on the patio, or anywhere else you see fit.

What You’ll Need

  • Patio paint or some sort of water proof outdoor paint
  • Smooth rounded rocks (can be purchased at gardening shops)
  • Small paint brushes
  • Toothpicks
  • Outdoor paint sealer

How to Make

Get the rocks and use the paintbrush to paint the rocks with varying colors and patterns. We can’t provide you with artistic lessons — that is up to you and your kids.

Simply paint the ladybugs or bees onto the rocks, let the paint dry, and then seal them with the sealant. It really does not get much easier than that!

5. Homemade Can Windchimes

We think that this is by far one of the best craft ideas for kids, and really for anybody who has a hankering to make some really awesome homemade crafts. Now, this is a wind chime made out of cans. Of course, it might not sound like a real windchime, but if done right, the sound can actually be pretty close.

Moreover, it’s a cool project because it’s something you can hang anywhere, whether indoors or out, but of course outdoors in the wind is best. It’s also a great craft idea because you kids can paint and decorate the cans to their liking. Moreover, this homemade can wind chime is something that can be made at home with limited materials and virtually no cost. It will take a couple hours to make, which might actually be a good thing, as it will keep the kids occupied.

What You’ll Need

  • 8 cans (preferably of varying sizes)
  • Paint sealer
  • Nail
  • Hammer
  • Thick string or thin rope
  • Lampshade frame or a crotchet hoop
  • Paint and decorative materials
  • Lighter or some sort of open flame.

How to Make

  1. Paint the cans; you can paint them any way you see fit, whether with solid colors, rainbows, or you can even take the time to paint some cool drawings onto the cans.
  2. Allow enough time for the paint to fully dry on the cans.
  3. Seeing as this homemade wind chime will most likely be going outside, it’s a good idea to use a clear paint sealer to ensure that the paint does not wear off due to rain, snow, and wind.
  4. Now, take the hammer and nail, and make a small hole in the bottom of each can. We assume that you have already emptied the cans of their contents, so they won’t have a lid, just a bottom.
  5. Now, take your thick string or thin rope and pass one end through the hole you just made in the can. Tie a knot in the end of the string inside of the can and use a lighter to melt the knot shut. This will ensure that the rope or string stays securely inside of the cans. Repeat this step for each can and make sure that each length of string or rope is slightly longer than the previous one, so the cans all hang at a slightly different level.
  6. Now tie the other ends of the strings to the lamp shade hoop or a crochet hoop. Really, any kind of metal hoop will do just fine. Arrange the cans so they look nice when hanging down, and finally, hang the finished homemade can wind chimes wherever you see fit.

6. Fingerprint Art

This is a really great craft idea for kids, and it’s something that can then be hung up on a wall. Here, the point is to make some kind of art or painting using fingerprints. Kids love getting their hands dirty and being messy, making this a perfect craft for kids of all ages. Here, the point is to use different colors of paint, and use fingers to make the painting, with the end result being a cool picture made out of your children’s fingerprints.

For the picture itself, as long as it’s not too difficult, you can choose literally anything at all. Some people choose to make a fingerprint map, such as of the outline of a state or a country, but it could also be something like an elephant, or really anything else. For this project, because it involves your kids having their hands covered in paint, be sure to work in a space that is easily cleaned of paint, or in other words, not on a carpet or a nice wooden table.

What You’ll Need

  • Large piece of construction paper, a presentation board, or a canvas
  • Various colors of non-toxic paint (you can get finger paint specifically)
  • An image to paint
  • Small containers
  • Fingers and thumbs
  • Rags, cloth, and newspaper
  • Old clothes

How to Make

This one is exceedingly simple.

  1. Just lay down some newspaper underneath the paper of canvas to prevent paint from getting everywhere.
  2. Pour out the finger paint into small containers that are easy to dip fingers into.
  3. Get to painting whatever image you have chosen. Dip fingers in paint and create fingerprints on the paper or canvas. Slowly add more fingerprints to create a finished shape or image.
  4. It’s a good idea to work with single colors, finish with one color, then move to the next, or else paint will get cross-contaminated and change colors. You don’t want to mix colors here.
  5. Be sure that your kids are wearing old clothes which you don’t mind getting covered in paint!

7. Paper Plate Fish

If you have kids that love colorful fish, this is a great craft idea. The point here is to make some simple yet colorful and elegant tropical fish using paint and paper plates. It’s a very easy project, more than ideal for young kids, it doesn’t require a lot of materials, it’s pretty fast-paced, very affordable, and not too messy either.

What You’ll Need

  • Paper plates
  • Paint
  • Containers for the paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Newspaper

How to Make

  1. Lay down some newspaper on the work area, just to protect from damage.
  2. Trace and cut out some fins from paper plates, the fins of the fish.
  3. Glue the fins of the fish onto whole paper plates and allow enough time for the glue to dry.
  4. Paint the fish whatever way you see fit, just so they look bright and tropical.
  5. Glue the googly eyes to the fish, where the head would be.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are plenty of really neat craft ideas for kids, and we haven’t covered all of them today. If you want to make something cool, your kids like being creative, and you want to get them away from the TV, these craft ideas are some of the best out there.
