Fun Activities for Kids
We live in a world dictated by technology, and for kids, this means playing a lot of video games and watching a lot of TV. Now, we aren’t saying that a bit of gaming and binging TV shows is a bad thing, but there is also too much of a good thing. If you want to get your kids away from the screen, get them moving, and show them the world outside of the internet, here are some really fun activities for kids, which you as a parent might just happen to enjoy as well.
If you are hosting a birthday party or your kids are having friends over, one activity they all love is a scavenger hunt. Scavenger hunts are great for kids because it allows them to work with their friends and play in teams to find certain objects.
The aim of a scavenger hunt is to follow clues from one place to the next, and to keep following the clues, with the end goal of being the person to find the most items or get to the final location first. It takes a bit of time to set everything up, but it’s an activity that’s great for groups of kids, it eats up a good deal of time, and it provides a ton of fun for the duration. Kids love following clues, they like problem solving, and they love finding prizes too.
Although not everybody can be a professional dancer, it’s still something that everyone can do, and this includes kids. There are tons of songs out there specially designed to get kids into a groovy mode, such as the Hokey Pokey, just to name one. Kids love dancing because it gets their blood flowing, it lets them be wild, crazy, and creative, and so much more.
There are tons of kid-friendly dancing songs, and it also involves music of course, which is something that most people enjoy. Not only is dancing fun for kids, but for adults too, especially when you get to watch the kids bust out some funky dance moves. Moreover, it’s also a good way for kids to get some exercise, tire themselves out, and ensure that they sleep during the night, something which parents everywhere can surely appreciate.
Arts and Crafts
Yes, good old arts and crafts. Kids love being artistic and that’s a good thing. Kids love expressing their emotions through art, and better yet, getting a bit messy is always fun too. Moreover, there are plenty of crafts which can serve some kind of purpose too.
Drawings, painting, macaroni art, homemade wind chimes, customized cushion seats, and so much more. The possibilities for kids’ art and crafts are virtually limitless. It’s great because kids can make some cool objects, they feel satisfied after, and it’s whole lot of fun. Just be sure to put down a bit of newspaper or else you may end up with a huge mess in the house.
Kids always love stories, and for good reason, because they are fantastical and captivating. Submerging your kids into a reality other than their own, a magical and creative environment with monsters, cartoon characters, and hilarious stories is always a go-to activity. Get some awesome picture books and have a story session.
Kids are all about imagination and they love pretending to be the characters in a story too. What’s really cool is that with all the new tech at our disposal, there are plenty of interactive and electronic story books which submerge children into alternate realities. A few good stories can eat up a whole afternoon and provide a whole lot of fun.
Cooking and Baking
Ok, so here we aren’t talking about cooking a 7-course meal or some kind of complicated pastry. However, most kids love being in the kitchen, especially when they get to help their parent make something tasty that can be enjoyed when it is done. Whatever you cook or bake with your kids doesn’t have to be complex or gourmet, but it better be colorful and tasty.
Something which kids seems to love doing is making cookies, especially then there’s a ton of icing and sprinkles to use for decorations. It’s a good way for kids to get their hands dirty, to use up some energy, to learn food basics, to be artistic, and at the end of the day, end up with a tasty treat too. Who knows, maybe if you start early enough, you might just end up with a little Gordon Ramsay at the helm of your kitchen.
If you happen to live in a climate with cold winters, ice skating is a great activity for kids. This is especially true in places with winters cold enough to make public outdoor skating rinks. Skating seems to be something that kids love, and no, they usually don’t mind the cold because they’re having way too much fun.
Skating is a great form of exercise and physical activity, and of course, it can be a lot of fun too, especially when there’s a cup of hot cocoa at the end of the day. Go anywhere it’s cold, like Canada, and you’ll find kids ice skating all winter long. Sometimes there is just nothing better than slapping on a pair of skates and hitting the ice. Who knows, you might find out that you have the next big ice hockey or figure skating champion living in your house!
This one is for all of the game lovers out there. Maybe you have a child that loves gaming, and no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to pry them away from their consoles. For these kids, a fun activity might be to go to a local arcade or gaming center.
Sure, they will still be playing video games, but they also get out the house, meet new people, and if they game well enough, earn plenty of tokens to take home some cool prizes at the end of the day. There’s also the fact that you’ll introduce your kids to some really neat old-school video games which they’ve probably never heard of.
If you have a child that is into cars, racing, and loves living a high-octane life, you could always try go karting. No, it’s not the best for very young kids, but children ages 8 and up can definitely get a kick out of blasting around a go kart course. It’s exhilarating, to say the least.
As far as we are concerned, science centers provide a whole lot of fun for kids. If you have a science center nearby, we would recommend taking your children to it. These places are true wonderous marvels for kids, places with activities galore, with lots of lights, sounds, cool shapes, and plenty of things to do. Not only are they fun for the whole family, they also provide for plenty of educational opportunities.
Something else which virtually all kids love doing is swimming. For one reason or another, splashing around in the water is one of the best things kids love doing. It’s wet, it’s fun, it’s messy, and so much more. As far as kids are concerned, it usually doesn’t matter whether it’s an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a lake, and ocean, or anything in between.
As long as there is water to surf on, liquid to splash with, and water to dive under and jump into, kids couldn’t care less. Of course, if you want to up the ante a bit, you can always take them to water parks, complete with slides, wave pools, snacks, and more.
Mini golf is another fan favorite for kids. Forget about real golf — kids don’t want to play actual golf. Heck, even most adults find golf to be nothing more than a tedious nuisance, one which for some reason eats up a full day of television programming. However, thanks to the shrunken course and all of the cool obstacles, mini golf is totally different.
Zoos and Aquariums
The other thing we would recommend doing with your kids is going to see animals that you can’t see simply walking outdoors. Yes, kids absolutely love animals, and it doesn’t matter if they are above or underwater. You and the family can make a whole fun day out of going to the zoo or an aquarium, plus these places often have some really great child-friendly activities.
When it comes down to it, there is really no shortage of fun activities for kids, and things that the whole family can enjoy. At the end of the day, it’s all worth it as long as you get to spend quality time with the kids and watch them having a blast.
